Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 9:00am-5:00pm, with some evenings required

Salary: $70,000 per year

Job Summary:

The Social Worker specializing in substance abuse counseling will deliver therapeutic counseling services to justice-involved women, working under the supervision of the Director of the Visiting and Family Assistance Program.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide holistic supportive counseling and case management services to women both during detention and in the community after release.
  • Determine the appropriate treatment services for clients based on the severity of substance use diagnosis, stages of change, immediate needs, and develop treatment plans using a person-centered approach.
  • Collaborate with the client’s support network and other service providers on treatment planning, service coordination, and case management support, aiming to promote the client’s recovery and community stability.
  • Employ motivational interviewing, and recovery and trauma-informed approaches in service delivery.
  • Maintain accurate client information and documentation in electronic databases and hard files, and submit regular data reports.
  • Attend internal staff meetings, trainings, and supervision, as well as external meetings and trainings with resource partners.
  • Adhere to all jail procedures, processes, and security regulations, including PREA requirements.
  • Perform additional department or agency-related duties or special projects as directed by the supervisor.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • LMHC, LMSW, or LCSW required.
  • CASAC preferred.
  • Experience working with individuals with serious mental illness and/or co-occurring substance use disorders is required.
  • Experience with evidence-based models related to the treatment of substance use and mental illness is required.
  • Experience working with individuals involved in the criminal legal system is preferred.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to provide effective services and produce accurate written documents in a timely manner.
  • Capability to work with people from diverse backgrounds in a culturally inclusive manner.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain solid, productive boundaries and work cooperatively with DOC and uniformed staff.
  • Successful completion of a background investigation by DOC as part of the volunteer application process.
  • Proficiency in computer and technical skills, specifically Microsoft Office programs.
  • Spanish language fluency is preferred.

Specifications for Physical Requirements:

  • Flexibility to work evenings or occasional weekends, as needed.
  • Ability to travel across the five boroughs and to Rikers Island.
